Mitchell DeJong Sails to Another Victory in Red Bull GRC LItes

mitchell dejong redbullMitchell DeJong proved once again that he is the class of the current Red Bull GRC Lites field, posting lap and race times comparable to Supercars drivers on the way to a victory at the inaugural Volkswagen Rallycross DC, his second straight win in the U.S. and third consecutive victory this year.

The sixteen year old’s confidence has been at an all time high since his history-making X Games Gold Medal victory in Austin, Texas and it showed on the track in Washington, D.C.  Mitchell won both heat races, and set fastest lap times in practice and qualifying.

mitchell dejong carWhen it came to the main event, Mitchell was stacked against seven hungry drivers looking for their first win of 2014. Fast teammate Kevin Eriksson and former F1 driver Nelson Piquet Jr. were focused from the front row to steal Mitchell’s fire. Mitchell’s inside start position coupled with his impressive starts left the seven competitors behind him to never contest for the lead.

mitchell dejongWith another gold medal in hand, Mitchell could then talk about the drama that unfolded prior to the main event.  “I really liked the challenge of this track and the tight tarmac section. In the heat race, we had some issues where the radiator broke and then after we got that together, the car wouldn’t start just before the final, so we had a new problem to deal with and only about 20 minutes before racing.  We made it to the final just minutes before the start. I had a good start but so did Kevin, we were side by side through turn 1 and 2 and luckily I had the inside going in to turn 3, which was the corner that meant the most off the start. After that I was just focusing on not making mistakes and doing the best I can.”
